The shoulder is placed in a sling for four weeks and physical therapy for passive arm movement is initiated to prevent stiffness.
When the sling is removed after four weeks the patient can start using the arm for daily activities.
At this time, a physical therapist instructs the patient in active motion and passive motion exercises continue.
After two months a biofeedback program begins so that the muscle transfer can be trained to function properly. Therapy usually continues for approximately four months.
It can take as long as a year to regain maximum function and relief of symptoms.
